Chairman David Barron provided a brief introduction and highlighted that the past year has been a difficult period for the trust, however the board believes that the focus on quality companies with the ability to invest across the market cap spectrum gives the trust flexibility and resilience. Managers Ben Ritchie and Rebecca Maclean reviewed the trust’s performance and portfolio over the past year.
Ben reflected on the past year's performance, noting three main headwinds - a missed opportunity with the portfolio's underweight position in banks, high-quality companies faced a tough market, and a few stocks proved challenging. However, there were companies in the portfolio that delivered significant total returns and income growth including a UK construction company, and a gaming franchise which gained traction internationally. Rebecca shared examples of two portfolio holdings: Relex and Games Workshop, before talking through the portfolio's positioning. Ben concluded with an optimistic outlook, emphasising the trust's quality focus, the resilient UK economy, and attractive portfolio opportunities.
